Summer is here, the time of year where the days are longer, it\u2019s hot outside and the windows are thrown open; school finishes for the summer, the holidays are upon us and you want to spend time outdoors with friends. But with the summer heat, another menace arrives: <\/span>mosquitoes<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Admit it, we always feel plagued by these insects. But did you know that <\/span>mosquitoes <\/b>are not just a pest for people, but also for our four-legged friends, be they <\/span>dogs or cats<\/b>?<\/span><\/p>\n

Dogs and cats also get bitten by mosquitoes<\/strong><\/h2>\n

There is no distinction when it comes to talking about <\/span>mosquito bites<\/b>: these insects actually <\/span>feed on blood<\/b>, or more precisely, certain proteins that are essential for egg production, also feeding on nectar, liquids and sugary substances.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

However, we don\u2019t need to guard against all mosquitoes; in fact, <\/span>only the females can bite<\/b>, as they are equipped with a mouthpiece that is appropriate for this purpose. So begins the hunt for sources of blood: because the female mosquito has a “radar” that allows it to track sources of carbon dioxide (common to all mammals, including <\/span>pets<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n\n

It is not uncommon to find <\/span>mosquito bites on cats and dogs<\/b>, as well as on ourselves.<\/span><\/p>\n

Are mosquitoes dangerous to cats and dogs?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Mosquito SOS<\/b>: be concerned (and annoyed), but in moderation. In the majority of cases, <\/span>mosquitoes <\/b>do not <\/span>pose a risk to dogs and cats<\/b>, just as with people. However, even pets have to deal with redness, localised swelling and itchiness.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Then there are cases where mosquitoes can be carriers of dangerous, indeed fatal, illnesses like <\/span>heartworm disease<\/b>. So prevention is best.<\/span><\/p>\n

Heartworm: the disease transmitted to dogs and cats by mosquitoes<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The greatest risk to our pets is <\/span>heartworm<\/b>. This is a<\/span> disease passed on by mosquitoes<\/b> and, specifically, by the feared <\/span>tiger mosquito <\/b>which transmits the parasite (larva) by<\/span> biting dogs and cats<\/b>, with cardiopulmonary (<\/span>Dirofilaria immitis<\/span><\/i>) or cutaneous (<\/span>Dirofilaria repens<\/span><\/i>) consequences. <\/span>Heartworm <\/b>reaches the heart and pulmonary artery <\/span>in cats and dogs<\/b> through the cardiac cycle, where it starts to proliferate (up to even 30 cm in length).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

How does heartworm manifest in dogs?<\/b> Initially, it is often asymptomatic, it then manifests with cardiac and respiratory problems and, if severe, death. <\/span>Cats<\/b>, first believed to be immune, can also be infected with heartworm, but seem less sensitive and, therefore, less at risk of complications.<\/span><\/p>\n

The importance of prevention and protection<\/strong><\/h2>\n

There is no excuse: the correct thing to do is not to run for cover, but to <\/span>prevent dogs and cats <\/b>(and people)<\/span> from getting bitten by mosquitoes<\/b>. Remember, a <\/span>dog or a cat that has been bitten by a mosquito<\/b> could also have an allergic reaction (to be treated according to the vets instructions).<\/span><\/p>\n\n

What can you do? In addition to contacting your vet to select the most effective anti-mosquito treatment for your pet, here are <\/span>some tips and tricks <\/b>to minimise the presence of mosquitoes in your home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

For example, you can <\/span>avoid the proliferation of insects<\/b> by removing any stagnant water from containers and saucers (which are an ideal location for mosquito larvae) or by installing mosquito nets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

But not just that: there are other<\/span> ways to defend against mosquito bites<\/b>, for example dedicated ULTRASOUNDtech\u2122 mosquito products, such as <\/span>ZeroZzz\u2122AMBIENT<\/a> and ZeroZzz\u2122AIR<\/a><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Absolutely not. These devices are harmless to pets and to people (including those with pacemakers or other life-saving devices). \n<\/p>\n\n
